"So, thankfully, everyone in his army was fast asleep.

" ...Almost everyone."

Monstrox and Ruina talk about the Grey Knight one early morning. Takes place between episodes 32 (s4e2) and 33 (s4e3).

Author's Notes:

Due to my headcanon of "Clay got put in magic stasis by Wanda to protect him from herself and was found and freed over 100 years later and was raised by a nice old lady who gave him his name for the first 5 years of his life" this fic was kinda needed for my own reference. I still think it's good though, so that's why it's up here as well.

Note to self: write a fic about the above headcanon.

The dark sky was only just starting to lighten again. There was a shift in Monstrox’s cloudy form that had stirred him awake just a few minutes earlier; much earlier than he would have liked. Thankfully, Jestro wasn’t awake to pester him about going out to look for another Forbidden Power this early. He figured the jester had only fallen asleep an hour ago at most - all the lightning coursing through his veins made it harder for him to burn out. So, thankfully, everyone in his army was fast asleep.

...Almost everyone.

As Monstrox drifted over to the burnt out fire, seeing if he could maybe light it up again, he spotted Ruina walk up beside him out of the corner of his eye.

With a smirk, Ruina said, “I didn’t know you were a morning person now, Monstrox.”

“I’m not!” he snapped in reply. “Believe me, I don’t wanna be awake right now.”

Ruina snickered to herself before her eyes fell to the burnt out fire. She was silent for a moment before saying, “We really need some more reinforcements. With that Grey Knight missing, we could easily take the rest of the Nexo Knights.” She looked up at Monstrox as she asked, “What happened to those Lava Monsters of yours?”

Monstrox groaned. “Went all goody-goody on me when I wasn’t there to keep ‘em in line. Traitors, the lot of ‘em.”

“Oh. That’s a shame.”

There was a brief moment of silence before Monstrox spoke again, “But speakin’ of the Grey Knight, there’s somethin’ about him you’ll find interestin’.”

Ruina’s eyebrows arched. “Oh? Like what?”

“You know his name, right?”

“Well, I heard the other Nexo Knights call him Clay before he completely turned to stone, but other than that…” Ruina shrugged.

“His last name’s Moorington.”

Ruina’s eyes went wide. “You don’t mean…”

“Yeah. Considerin’ how close he is to Merlok, I’m certain he’s your son.”

Silence fell between the two mages. They stood - or hovered, in Monstrox’s case - in place for minutes. The sky grew a little bit lighter.

After what seemed like an eternity, Ruina asked, “Then why is he a knight?”

“Clay? Psh,” a thin bolt shot from Monstrox’s mouth. “Merlok probably never told him about you. I wouldn’t be surprised if he forgot to, either. I mean, he forgot my identity a couple of decades after he turned me into a book.”

Ruina said nothing in reply - she only stared at the burnt out fire, her eyes narrowed.

Monstrox stared at her, waiting for a reply. When her reply never came, he frowned. He floated closer to her and said, “Come on, making fun of your brother’s incompetence is funny.”

Ruina was silent for a few moments more before an evil smile appeared on her face. She looked up at Monstrox and told him, “Well Monstrox, I hope you get some rest before we officially start the day.”

With that, Ruina returned to her cruiser. Monstrox simply stared with a puzzled expression on his face. Ruina now had a plan of her own - one Monstrox was, as of right now, none the wiser to.
